EXO tops Forbes Korea’s “2015 Power Celebrity 40”

Forbes Korea released their “Power Celebrity 40” list for the year 2014 at the end of last month, surprisingly SM’s super group EXO came in at first place despite the scandals that rocked the group throughout last year (with two members filing lawsuits and one member caught in the midst of a date with a label member), the group rose four places to take the number one spot, whilst last years #1 SNSD dropped down to ninth. There are two steps involved in determining the Top 40, the first step involves finding the Top 100 most searched people of the year based on data provided by Nate, the second step involves measuring that celebrity’s:

1. Sales – Estimated based on appearance fees, CF guarantees, album sales, etc. + reported overseas income
2. Media Exposure – Number of appearances in the top 3 newspapers, magazine covers
3. Television Exposure – CF model ranking and appearances on talk shows and variety shows
4. Ratings –  For MC’s and actors this is based on TV ratings, for movie actors it is the total audience number, Gaon digital and physical sales rankings for singers and competition results for athletes
The final list is the 40 celebrities with the highest average ranking across all four categories.

Comparing last years top 5 and this years top 5, SBS’s hit drama “You Who Came From the Stars” clearly did wonders for the two leads as they’re both in the top four (Jeon Ji Hyun was 34th whilst Kim Soo Hyun was 17th on last years list), Big Bang dropped twenty two places to 23rd due to lack of domestic and international activities, Miss A’s Suzy dropped thirty one places, and although Ryu Hyun Jin did drop on the list he still remains in the top 10, meanwhile gymnast Son Yeon Jae wasn’t even on last years list. Roaring Currents actor Seung Yong Ryoo, B1A4, baseball player Lee Dae Ho and JYJ’s Junsu and Yoochun narrowly missed out on the top 40 for this year, whilst the list changes each year Big Bang, Girls Generation, Yoo Jae Suk, Kim Yuna and Park Ji Sung are five celebrities who have been a constant presence on the list for the past seven years.
Do Manager aka Kim Soo Hyun raked in a total of around 30 billion won in CF’s alone and has more than 20 CF contracts domestically and overseas in China, his leading lady Jeon Ji Hyun earned around 10 billion won domestically with a total of 13 CF’s. Although she is now retired Korea’s National Treasure Kim Yuna still receives “love calls” and participated in a total of 7 CF’s last year earning her an estimated 8 billion won.

First place winners, EXO topped the rankings across all categories especially album sales, according to the Gaon Music Chart the group sold around 724 777 in 2014, on top of this the group won an award at all the major year end award shows (Seoul Music Awards, Golden Disk Awards, SBS Music Awards, Mnet Asian Music Awards) taking home either  Male Group, Album of the Year, Singer of the Year or a variation of the three. Domestic revenue for their TV appearances including Chanyeol’s stint on SBS’s reality show Roommate, D.O’s appearance on SBS’s “It’s Okay, It’s Love“, Tao’s appearance on SBS’s Law of the Jungle and Baekhyun’s hosting gig on SBS’s Inkigayo as well as the groups CF’s amounts to about 160 Billion Won. The group is rumoured to be revealing a new song during their upcoming concert “EXO PLANET #2 ― The EXO’luXion” along with new versions of their hits “Growl” and “Overdose” the first concert takes place on March 7th at the Seoul Olympic Gymnastics Arena.
