We kick off the year with the 25th Seoul Music Awards which were held at the Olympics Gymnastics Arena in Seoul Olympic Park on the 14th of January (shout out to EXO’s Kai who celebrated his birthday on this day). The awards were hosted by MC Jun Hyun Moo, actress Honey Lee (Tazza 2) and EXID‘s Hani. The unstoppable EXO took home the biggest award of the night, the Daesang (Grand Prize) for the third year running marking them as the first artists to win the award for more than two consecutive years. The group also won the most awards for the night, taking home a Bonsang Award as well the Hallyu Special Award. The event was not without it’s hiccups though with Song of the Year winners Big Bang absent from the event despite not having an actual group schedule for that night, another notable absence for the night was JYJ‘s Junsu whom won the Popularity Award (which was based solely on fan votes online) according to the producers they had decided not to present the award during the live show to save time for other “major” awards hence Junsu’s absence however the announcement was met with outrage by fans who accused organisers of not sending him an invite. Jun Hyun Moo who was one of the co-hosts for the night also came under some fire for his comments about his fellow co-hosts love lives. Singer Ailee also got in a bit of hot water when she was shown playing on her phone during SHINee‘s performance, the artist later took to social media to explain herself saying that she had been downloading an app that allowed her to show a message on her screen so that she could hold it up in support of SHINee, she was later seen using the app to support BoA and EXO during their performances. SM Entertainment super group EXO are nominated for four awards this year including ‘Best Male Group‘, ‘Best Dance Performance‘ for their song “Call Me Baby“, which is also nominated for ‘Song of the Year‘ and the boys are also nominated for ‘Artist of the Year‘. Taking the number #1 spot on the list is actress Kim Hye Soo (“Goddess of the Workplace” and “Tazza: High Rollers”) who also happens to be the oldest person on the list, taking second and third are Jeon Ji Hyun (“You Who Came From the Stars“) and Kim Sa Rang (“Beloved Eun-Dong“).
Fun Fact: Three of the four members of girl group SISTAR all made the list. Continue reading
Popular MBC singing competition show Masked Singer (or King of Mask Singer) has been garnering considerable attention of late from the Korean public for revealing the hidden singing abilities of many idol vocalists who have appeared on the show. The competitors are given elaborate masks to conceal their identity, thereby eliminating factors like popularity and public perception which may influence audience votes. In an interview yesterday, PD Min Chul Ki was asked to name the Top 7 male and female idols with the best vocal skills, which he listed as follows (in no particular order):

The 2014 3rd APAN Star Awards (part of the annual Daejeon Drama Festival) was held a few days ago on November 15th and Jo In Sung was the big winner of the night for his performance in the critically-acclaimed It’s Okay, It’s Love, while two of his fellow castmates, Lee Kwang Soo and rookie actor Do Kyung Soo (D.O of EXO), also took home awards. To absolutely no one’s surprise, however, the show that earned the most nods was You Who Came From the Stars with a total of five – most notably Kim Soo Hyun winning the Actor Top Excellence award and both Kim Soo Hyun and Jeon Ji Hyun taking home the Hallyu Star award.
That’s not to say the night wasn’t without a few eyebrow-raising surprises – Kim Hee Sun (while I love her) winning the Actress Top Excellence for Feature-length Dramas for Wonderful Season over Ha Ji Won (Empress Ki) was unexpected, to say the least. I didn’t expect Kim Hee Ae to win Actress Top Excellence for Mini-series over Gong Hyo Jin either, though I wouldn’t say Gong Hyo Jin was robbed in this case – both actresses are excellent. But what about Jin Se Yeon winning a popularity award for Doctor Stranger? At least the love was spread out across the dramas nominated?
The APAN Star Awards ceremony was broadcasted on tvN on November 19th from 6-7pm.
