What had originally begun as a simple list updated for fun in order to organize the insane numbers of 2nd Gen-and-onwards Korean boybands and other male vocal/rock groups turned into… this.
Disclaimer: This list dates back to 2008-2010, so inevitably some of the information/pictures/music will be outdated – suggestions and tips from fans are very welcome. Also, not every group is listed because it’s simply impossible! Some well-known male vocal groups and rock bands were also included in this list’s original version; we’ve left them in, despite the list morphing into something more idol group-oriented.
Popular MBC singing competition show Masked Singer (or King of Mask Singer) has been garnering considerable attention of late from the Korean public for revealing the hidden singing abilities of many idol vocalists who have appeared on the show. The competitors are given elaborate masks to conceal their identity, thereby eliminating factors like popularity and public perception which may influence audience votes. In an interview yesterday, PD Min Chul Ki was asked to name the Top 7 male and female idols with the best vocal skills, which he listed as follows (in no particular order):
Hosted by Jun Hyun Moon, SISTAR’s Soyou and Super Junior’s Leeteuk the 24th Sports Seoul “Seoul Music Awards” was held at the Seoul Olympic Gymnastics Arena on the 22nd of January. To be eligible to be in the running for an award the artist must have released an album in the past year, winners are then chosen based on mobile votes (20%), Sports Seoul’s popularity poll (10%), digital downloads and album sales (40%) and judges scores (30%) (so even if an artist appears to be leading the poll based on fan votes, this does not necessarily mean that they will win if they have low sales/downloads or do not get a high judging score). SBS’s annual end-of-year music program the “SBS Gayo Daejun” was held on the 21st of December at the COEX in Seoul. The event was hosted by the specially formed group “Lucky Boys” which consisted of CNBlue’sJung Yonghwa, WINNER’sMino, B1A4’sBaro, 2PM’sNickhun and Infinite’sL the quintet were joined by Running Man’s Song Ji Hyo as co-host as well as ZE:A’sKwanghee who was the groups manager and M.I.B’sKangnam as their stylist. EXO were once again the biggest winners of the night taking home “Best Selfie” which was chosen based on the number of retweets of the selfie on the SBS Super5 Twitter account as well as “Best Male Group” and “Best Album” for Overdose.
